All aboard the Nurses Express as Mercure Sydney Central unveils an innovative conferencing solution
Mercure Sydney Central hires a train to give NSW Nurses ‘the best of both worlds’
What do you do when a conference group wants to use your hotel for accommodation, but has booked an event venue 20 kilometres away?
Simple – hire a train.
The NSW Nurses & Midwives Association has used Mercure Sydney Central for its annual conference accommodation for a number of years because of its central location and its proximity to what has been their usual conference venue – the Royal Randwick Racecourse events centre. However, with the Randwick centre being renovated, the Nurses & Midwives Association had to shift their venue to Rosehill Gardens, but they didn’t want to shift their accommodation base.
With Mercure Sydney Central right next to Central Station, the team at the Mercure came up with an ‘express solution’ to the dilemma – arrange a NSW Nurses express train for the event.
For each day of the three days of the conference (7 – 9 August), a dedicated train has been organised via Cityrail to leave from Central at 0735am, with stops at Redfern, Strathfield, Clyde and Lidcombe to gather up the 400 delegates attending the conference. The train bypasses all of Sydney’s notorious traffic black spots to deliver the nurses to Rosehill Gardens at 0805am in time for a full-day’s conferencing.
A train will then pick up the group in the evening to deliver them back to Sydney, with stops on the way to enable nurses to get home or go to their hospitals.
“The solution is not only incredibly efficient in terms of getting them to and from the venue speedily, but it also takes hundreds of cars off the road at peak times,” says Mercure General Manager, Greg Brady.
“With the train, they will probably get to Rosehill even quicker than if they had been transported by bus to Randwick, and it means that they will be able to really build team spirit and camaraderie. The profession is spread so widely across the State and the country and this is their one major opportunity each year to build relationships and share their knowledge and experiences, so the ‘Nurses Express’ will have far greater benefits than just a means of transport.
“Our team will be onboard the train to serve food and refreshments likes trains of old, plus there will be polaroid cameras available so that delegates will have lasting memories long after the conference is over.
“For the nurses, being located at Central was the most convenient and cost effective accommodation option because of its ease of access from the airport and by train, and with events and meetings being held in the city, the provision of the ‘Nurses Express’ allows them to enjoy the best of all worlds.”
Delegates arrived at the Mercure Sydney Central on Tuesday evening, where they were greeted with a welcome function, before the conference got underway the following morning
Since the last time the nurses stayed at the Mercure, the hotel has undergone a multi-million renovation with all rooms featuring Mercure’s stylish new look. Accommodation rooms have adopted a fresh approach to styling, and feature a warm colour palette of purple and grey interiors with dark marble bench tops, creating a relaxed, yet contemporary look.
The conference floors are also getting a full makeover, with the popular balcony area upgraded to capture the history of the Central area through a series of art installations highlighting the importance the Central region has had for the city over the past century.
Located in the south of Sydney’s CBD, by Railway Square, the hotel boasts one of the city’s most convenient locations, and is within easy walking distance of the city centre, Chinatown, Central Station, Capitol Theatre, and Darling Harbour.
A highlight of the hotel is the undercover rooftop swimming pool, sauna and gym, offering views of the city skyline, plus a variety of bar and restaurants for guests to explore.
