The increasing demands of modern life have reduced our standards of health and wellbeing. Gradually, we have fallen victim to competing demands, both at home and at work.

 

Many workplaces that don’t promote health and wellness are 4 x more likely to lose staff within 12 months [1], productivity gains of up to 15% can be achieved by improving the workplace environment [3] and workplace health programs can reduce sick leave by up to 30% [4].

 

Workers when in a workplace that has a focus on health and wellness has increased morale and engagement at work [2] and healthy workers are fitter, more aware and alert, more resilient against illness, and less likely to suffer manual handling injuries and strains [2]‚Äč.  Healthy worker programs can improve workers health and reduce their chances of developing diseases such as diabetes.

 

Mercure Sydney wants to ensure that all of our staff are happy, healthy and engaged at work, and therefore aim to have more of a well being focus on staff by introducing a well being month full of activities and free to all staff. In the month of June our Well Being Program was launched featuring an array of activities such as circuit training, massages, ergonomic assessments and healthy cooking classes to name a few. We also took this opportunity to raise awareness on different topics such as health eating, mental health, financial wellness and the cessation of smoking - which has now led one of our staff members on the path to stop smoking completely.

 

Workplace health and wellbeing programs not only have real potential to positively influence the health of our workforce, they also make good business sense – increasing

employee engagement and team cohesiveness in the short-term, and leading to reduced absenteeism, increased productivity and improved corporate social responsibility in the longer term.

 

My 5 top tips for health and well being in the workplace are:

 

  1. If a healthy lunch option is not available for you at work, pack your own lunch and do not eat at your desk!
  2. Encourage yourself to stretch your legs and take a break from your desk every 45 minutes
  3. Take the stairs instead of the elevator
  4. Regular deskercise – try some chair yoga or simple stretches while you work!
  5. Get an ergonomic assessments completed of your desk area to ensure your posture at your desk is correct
